Selebi granted leave to appeal

2010-11-16 12:16

Former national police commissioner Jackie Selebi was granted leave to appeal against his conviction by the Supreme Court of Appeal in Bloemfontein.

The court held that leave to appeal was granted in terms of whether the State had proved that Selebi had provided convicted drug trafficker Glenn Agliotti with anything in return as a result of gratification received from the convicted drug trafficker.

The rest of the grounds in Selebi’s application for leave to appeal were dismissed.

Earlier, South Gauteng High Court judge, Meyer Joffe, found Selebi guilty of corruption and sentenced him to 15 years imprisonment as a result of his finding that Selebi had received payments from Agliotti.

The court later granted Selebi leave to appeal only on the issue of the payments.
