Selebi moves for acquittal

Former police chief Jackie Selebi has filed the first papers in his

application for acquittal, The Star reported today.

His lawyer Wynanda Coetzee said the heads of argument had been

submitted to the trial judge and the State prosecutors.

When the trial resumes on April 7, the application will


Such applications are intended to convince a judge that the State

has failed in proving its case.

Generally, Selebi’s defence would argue that the evidence presented

by the State failed to prove the allegations on the charge sheet.

He is facing a charge of corruption and defeating the ends of

justice and has pleaded not guilty.
