Self-regulation of press is better: Langa

2011-07-07 14:22

Freedom of expression is enhanced by a press which regulates itself, former Chief Justice Pius Langa said today.

“I would be much prouder talking about a media which is self-regulating than a media regulated by the state,” he said at the launch of the Press Freedom Commission.

The independent commission, set up by Print Media SA and the SA National Editors Forum, will examine international practices to come up with the best form of self-regulation for the South African print media.

“The Press Freedom Council is an independent investigative commission to look at the regulation of print media.

“The PFC will be looking at various forms of regulation in terms of press regulation ... to cast an independent look at self-regulation of the print media in South Africa,” Langa said.

The PFC was set up in response to the ANC’s proposal for a statutory Media Appeals Tribunal which emerged at its 2007 national conference.

Sanef chairman Mondli Makhanya said the intention of the commission was not to stop the ANC from proceeding with the MAT.

“That is the ANC’s process ... What we asked the commission to do is to produce a Rolls Royce. Our views on state regulation is clear.”

He said Sanef wanted the “most effective” system of self-regulation the country could have.
