Semenya deserves a public apology – YCL

2010-07-07 12:16

Athlete Caster Semenya deserves a public apology after being

cleared to compete as a woman, the Young Communist League (YCL) has said.

YCL spokesperson Gugu Ndima said: “Caster Semenya deserves a public

apology from both the ASA (Athletics South Africa) and IAAF (International

Association of Athletics Federations).

“The much-anticipated results confirm that this was merely denial

from the West that an African athlete could achieve beyond the benchmark that

was put in place.”

The IAAF yesterday cleared Semenya (19), to compete as a woman

after reviewing the results of gender-verification tests, conducted nearly nine

months ago.

Ndima said the organisation had always had “faith” in Semenya: “We

believe this whole debacle was an affirmation that there are still deeply

entrenched stereotypes about how a woman is supposed to look in accordance to

European standards.

The IAAF should hang their heads in shame.”
