Semenya favourite for gold

2012-08-10 13:29

Caster Semenya will add to South Africa’s gold medal tally at the 2012 London Olympics, if bookmakers are to be believed.

Semenya is the favourite for the women’s 800m final, which takes place at tomorrow at 9pm (local time).

Semenya, the world champion from Berlin in 2009, can be backed at 8/11, with Russia’s Mariya Savinova (10/3) and Kenya’s Pamela Jelimo (4/1) expected to be her main challengers.

It has been a long dry spell for the Olympic team, particularly in the athletics where track and field had contested four finals in the last three days.

But Caster Semenya’s qualification for the 800m final inspired hope after Sunette Viljoen’s performance fell just short of earning her a bronze medal.

“It was very hard but I tried my best,” said Semenya who won her heat in a season best, and just the third time she had dipped under two minutes this year.

There was still room for drama on the track when the 4x400m relay team got a reprieve having not finished their first round heat.

They lodged a successful appeal and Kenya was disqualified after the IAAF ruled that their runner, Vincent Kilu, had obstructed Ofentse Mogawane prior to the exchange of the batons during the second leg.

The crash left Mogawane with a dislocated shoulder and LJ van Zyl has been roped in to take his place in the final tonight.
