Senzo goes home

2014-10-31 12:19

Senzo Meyiwa’s body is finally going home.

This morning, the Meyiwa family went to Kelly Khumalo’s mother’s home in Vosloorus, where Meyiwa was shot and killed on Sunday night, to perform a traditional Zulu ceremony.

Relatives, among them Meyiwa’s parents Samuel and Ntombifuthi, were escorted by a barrage of police cars and the morgue van carrying the football star’s body.

A neighbour said he saw Samuel Meyiwa talking to his son’s spirit at the door of the house.

He was carrying a branch which – according to Zulu tradition – his son’s spirit would latch on to until he arrived home in uMlazi, Durban.

A few neighbours were also allowed to join in.

“No one was at home so they [the Meyiwas] could not go inside. They had to do it at the door but at least it is done,” said the neighbour.

The ceremony is necessary to escort the deceased’s spirit to the next place before he is buried.

City Press understands that the family, morgue van and police drove in a convoy to the airport. Meyiwa’s body will be flown to Durban’s King Shaka International Airport.

Meyiwa (27) will be buried tomorrow.
