Sepeng launches Street Athletics

2012-02-24 08:47

Former South African 800m star Hezekiel Sepeng will launch the first edition of Street Athletics at Ikageng township in Potchefstroom, North West, today.

A 1996 Olympic Games silver medallist, Sepeng is the development officer for Athletics South Africa and part of his duties is to mould future track champions.

Athletics South Africa said the Street Athletics concept is to close off roads where prospective athletes can run in the streets of their homes, as opposed to having to travel distances to get to venues with facilities.

Athletes – under-13, -15 and -17 – will contest across the 50m, 150m, 300m and 500m distances and the top three fastest times in each category will race in a grand finale in Randfontein, West Rand, on March 24.

“Having sacrificed even my studies for the sake of running for the country, I felt that my life after sport was still in athletics,” Sepeng told City Press.

After Potchefstroom, his hometown, Sepeng will make stops at other North West towns of Carletonville, Westonaria, Rustenburg as well as Balfour in Mpumalanga.

Athletics South Africa said it will provide athletes competing in Potchefstroom with transport to and from schools, catering and T-shirts.

The athletics association is expected to confirm the dates and additional details for other venues in due course.
