Serena hints at possible Roddick doubles hook-up

2011-09-15 08:07

Surprise packet Serena Williams has dropped an intriguing Twitter bombshell, with the former number one hinting that she might be teaming up with Andy Roddick for some mixed doubles in Australia.

The possibilities for that to happen are limited, with the best guess the Hopman Cup mixed team event starting December 31. Williams won the trophy for the US in 2003 with James Blake and four years later with Mardy Fish.

Her post-US Open tweet, however, begs as many questions as it answers.

“Me and @andyroddick decided to play mixed doubles Australia! We Love Aussie! ...... Book it its real!,” the tweet read.

With the Williams’ track record for hyperbole, no conclusions can be drawn from the cryptic message, although Australian media have reported that Hopman Cup boss Paul McNamee and his staff are working behind the scenes to try and make sure the dream team can come together if possible.

“Can’t confirm anything just yet, it was a midnight tweet from Serena in the US, so no word from her agent at this stage,” the tournament website tweeted in response.

Williams and Roddick have had public discussions in recent months about hoping to play together at the London Olympics.

The only other possibility is that Williams was speaking of the Australian Open. But that is considered unlikely, as Roddick has not played any Grand Slam doubles for a decade.
