2011-06-29 09:43

The Sunshine Tour today named Serengeti Golf and Wildlife Estate as the venue for this year’s South African Open to be played from November 24 to 27.

The Ekurhuleni layout, conveniently located 15 minutes away from the airport, will host the Open which is being held in Gauteng for the first time since 2000 when it was played at Randpark Golf Club.

The tournament will follow the President’s Cup being played from November 17-20 at Royal Melbourne Golf Club in Australia.

Defending champion Ernie Els has already confirmed his participation in the event which is co-sanctioned with the European Tour.

“We are delighted to have Ernie Els confirm his place in the field, and we look forward to some of the world’s leading golfers joining him at Serengeti, which is a magnificent venue for our national Open,” said Selwyn Nathan, director of the Sunshine Tour.

President of the South African Golf Association, Colin Burger was pleased the event is returning to Gauteng.

“The SA Open forms part of the foundation of South African golf, and it is important that all South Africans are given an opportunity to share in its history,” said Burger.

“Following an extended run at some of our finest coastal golf courses, we are delighted to see it return to Gauteng.”

The Jack Nicklaus designed golf course will host its first major golf tournament and the challenging layout will provide a good test for the professionals.

Tickets for the championship will be available at Computicket.
