Serero back in Bafana squad for Afcon qualifiers

2014-09-25 12:45

Bafana Bafana coach Ephraim Shakes Mashaba has made six changes to the team that will play back-to-back Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Congo-Brazzaville next month.

In come Kermit Erasmus, Tefu Mashamaite, Reneilwe Letsholonyane, Thulani Serero, Fagrie Lakay and Kwanda Mngonyama, who were surprisingly left out for the previous two games against Sudan and Nigeria.

Bafana travel to Congo’s second-largest city, Pointe-Noire, to take on the Group A leaders on Saturday October 11 and welcome the same Red Devils four days later at Polokwane’s Peter Mokaba stadium.

Mashaba said it would be a tough game, as playing away in Congo always posed challenges – but said the team would be prepared for anything thrown at them.

He also said the captaincy would be rotated because they wanted to have more leaders in the team.

Bafana will assemble on Sunday October 5 and will be based in Rustenburg at Royal Marang Hotel, where they will use an artificial pitch.

The squad:

Goalkeepers: Senzo Meyiwa, Darren Keet, Dumisani Msibi

Defenders: Anele Ngcongca, Ayabulela Magqwaka, Thabo Matlaba, Tefu Mashamaite, Eric Mathoho, Sibusiso Khumalo, Rivaldo Coetzee, Thulani Hlatshwayo

Midfielders: Reneilwe Letsholonyane, Andile Jali, Oupa Manyisa, Themba Zwane, Keegan Dolly, Mandla Masango, Sibusiso Vilakazi, Dean Furman

Strikers: Kermit Erasmus, Bongani Ndulula, Tokelo Rantie, David Zulu and Fagrie Lakay
