Serero goes for net

Exciting Ajax Cape Town midfielder Thulani Serero is set to make a clean sweep at the Absa Premiership’s end of the season award ceremony later this month.

Serero has been nominated in all but one category and is tipped to walk away with no less than three awards.

The enterprising 21-year-old midfielder has been nominated for the Absa Player of the Season but he faces stiff competition from Orlando Pirates’ Andile Jali and Kaizer Chiefs’ captain Jimmy Tau.

Serero will again square up against Jali and Bloemfontein Celtic defender Eric Mathoho for the Hot Young Player of the Season accolade.

Serero’s goal against Mamelodi Sundowns in a thrilling 4-all draw last month is also in contention for the Absa-lutely Goal of the Season category honours.

However, he faces another tough challenge from Chiefs striker Knowledge Musona’s bicycle kick goal against Mpumalanga Black Aces in December, and Tlou Segolela’s pitch-length run that resulted into a goal against Free State Stars on January 29.

Serero is also tipped to be chosen by his peers in the league for the Players’ Player of the Season award, for which all the Premiership players vote.

Bloemfontein Celtic goalkeeper Patrick Tignyemb, who conceded 19 goals and kept 11 clean sheets in 27 starts before yesterday’s game against Aces, has been nominated in the best ’keepers category alongside Sundowns’ Wayne Sandilands and veteran Ajax goalminder Hans Vonk.

The coach whose team wins the Premiership title will win the Coach of the Season award, with the Dutch duo of Foppe de Haan and Ruud Krol vying for this prestigious award.
