Sergeant Katongo needs to rediscover his scoring drill

2010-01-08 09:59

ZAMBIA striker Christopher Katongo burst onto the international

stage with a hat-trick against South Africa in a qualifier for the previous

(2008) Africa Cup of Nations in Ghana.

Then a Lusaka-based national army corporal, he gave one of the

deadliest displays of finishing seen in a qualifying competition covering five

decades with three goals before Bafana Bafana knew what hit them.

He was promoted to sergeant for his feat and soon became a

professional footballer, first with Jomo Cosmos in South Africa, then Brondy in

Denmark, and now Arminia Bielefeld in the German second division.

Christopher, whose younger South Africa-based brother Felix is also

a regular national team starter as a midfielder, did not impress in the

qualifiers for Angola, scoring just a single goal.

And unless he rediscovers his scoring touch, Chipolopolo (Copper

Bullets: as the Zambian national team is known) seem doomed to a sixth

consecutive first round exit after tackling Group D opponents Cameroon, Tunisia

and Gabon.

Born in the mining town of Mufulira 27 years ago, the 1.69m striker

began his football career with Kalulushi Modern Stars and sprang to national

prominence after joining army outfit Green Buffaloes.
