Serial rapist gets 95-year jail term

2011-08-03 07:16

A Muldersdrift serial rapist has been sentenced to 95 years in jail.

Shavhani Phophi (33) was earlier convicted of raping five women and an under-aged girl.

Phophi was also found guilty on two counts of theft and three counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances.

“At this day and age in this country, we still encounter perpetrators who terrorise communities like you did,” said Magistrate Keith Page in the Krugersdorp Magistrates Court.

“You showed little sympathy for your victim by manipulating, deceiving and committing callous behaviour towards them,” he said, according to the Sowetan newspaper.

“I have no doubt that they were extensively traumatised. What is striking is the trauma you inflicted on them. Today they live in fear on a daily basis.”

One of Phophi’s victims committed suicide earlier this year.
