Service your vehicle before Easter holiday journey

2010-03-27 09:13

It is important for motorists to pre-trip check and service their

vehicles before embarking on their journeys this coming Easter weekend, the Road

Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) said today.

Spokesman Ashref Ismail said in a statement that this long weekend

trips were often not properly planned and safety was not given top priority

during journeys.

Failure to conduct these safety checks, Ismail said often resulted

in a number of accidents, deaths and injuries.

“Mechanical failure will not only frustrate you due to being

stranded alongside the road but it could also endanger your life and the lives

of your passengers,” he said.

He said a pre-trip inspection included looking under the vehicle

for obvious leaks or obstructions, checking all lights and indicator lenses,

which must be clean and without cracks.

He said motorists also needed to make sure that outside mirrors

were clean and in good condition and check the windscreen to ensure that it was

clean and without damage.

Also on Ismail’s safety check was a tyres inspection for correct

inflation, visible damage and depth of tread.

Checking oil, water and brake fluid levels, fan belt, the spare

wheel, jack and wheel spanner was also important, he said.

Ismail said once the outside of the vehicle has been checked, the

driver must have someone help them to check their parking lights, brake lights

and indicators to ensure that they were in good working order.

He added that drivers must keep their daylights on for maximum
