Shakes has unfinished business with Bafana

2012-06-09 20:28

National Under-23 coach Ephraim “Shakes” Mashaba still has unfinished business with Bafana Bafana.

Mashaba, who was unceremoniously dropped from the team in 2004, still harbours ambitions to continue where he left off.

Mashaba is the only coach to have led a South African team to the Olympics in 2000; he had a successful stint with the senior national team after winning the Cosafa tournament in 2003; and qualified the team for the 2004 Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia.

Although he failed to repeat the same feat last year when his weakened team was knocked out of the CAF Under-23 Championships in Morocco, Mashaba’s coaching prowess is well documented.

Not one to hold back, Mashaba is able to bring out the best in players and also nurture talent, as was seen with the class of 2000 at the Sydney Olympics.

About his name being on the shortlist, Mashaba said: “There is nothing new. I don’t think there is a coach who does not want to assist the nation when asked to do so.”
