Tractor driver Gordon Selemogo got more than President Jacob Zuma’s ear when he told Zuma about the lack of soccer facilities for children in a poor community outside Kuruman in the Northern Cape.

“The president took my number to phone. He asked me how the kids played, and I said they played well,” he said. “He said he will come back to me about it, he will phone.”

Zuma sat on Selemogo’s tractor as they ploughed a row and sowed maize during the launch of government’s Fetsa Tlala (Eradicate Hunger) campaign at the Manyeding Agricultural Cooperative.

The department of agriculture has partnered with the community to provide them with money, equipment and expertise for the cooperative.

“I heard they said the president is a down-to-earth person. I asked him things and he answered me straight,” he said.

He also told Zuma that soccer was big among the kids in the community, and that they often played in the streets.

The team had even won a tournament, but they didn’t have proper shoes or a ball.

Selemogo said he believed Zuma would call, but he couldn’t say that would happen for sure.

Asked how it was to share a tractor with Zuma, he said: “I can’t say how it felt, it is a miracle. I never thought I’d sit on the tractor with the president.”
