Should Jacob Zuma do a Beyoncé?

2014-02-13 14:39

Should President Jacob Zuma rehearse his state of the nation address the night before he delivers it, like Beyoncé would rehearse before a show, or could it cause security problems? ANC Youth League bigwig Shaka Sisulu tweeted that he had suggested this to his father, National Assembly Speaker Max Sisulu. But his old man got “riled up”, claiming this could cause the speech to leak. Last night Sisulu junior tweeted:

He followed that with another tweet:

It has been rumoured that Sisulu junior could be on the ANC’s parliamentary candidate list for the May elections, although this couldn’t be confirmed.

Zuma is known for his halting speech delivery, like when he famously misread Development Bank of Southern Africa as Absa in 2010, soon after it came to light that he had had a love child with Sonono Khoza, who worked for the bank, or last year, when he had the flu and pronounced words like “rabid” as “rabbit”.

Last month, he had trouble reading the nine-figure sum paid for the Mala Mala land restitution case in Mpumalanga. A video clip of the embarrassing moment went viral on YouTube.

His speeches, unlike that of former president Thabo Mbeki, have also been shrouded in secrecy.

Unlike under Mbeki’s presidency, journalists have never had previews from presidency staff of Zuma’s speeches in the week before the state of the nation address.

All that Zuma told SAfm this morning is that he felt privileged to be able to report back to the nation.
