Shrien Dewani’s murder trial kicked off with an unexpected admission by his lawyer today: the wealthy Briton is bisexual.

Defence advocate Francois van Zyl told the packed Western Cape High Court that even though the 34-year-old Briton is bisexual, he truly loved his late wife, Anni.

Van Zyl said Dewani has had sex with both men and women, but that he was instantly attracted to Anni when they originally met in 2009.

“[Shrien] and [Anni] had their differences but he really loved her. Not just because she was pretty. She made him laugh,” said Van Zyl.

Van Zyl went on to read extracts from a letter Shrien wrote to Anni soon before their wedding in Mumbai, India, presumably to show that the couple’s relationship was loving and solid.

Among other things, Shrien apparently cut short a holiday to Las Vegas with friends to join Anni in India in 2010.

Anni had growing doubts over their upcoming wedding and Shrien was determined to comfort her, Van Zyl said.

He added that Shrien wanted to have children with Anni.

Media leaks from both sides of the trial have suggested that Dewani’s sexuality was central to Anni’s murder in November 2011.

It is believed that the prosecution will argue that he masterminded her killing during their honeymoon in South Africa in a desperate bid to get out of the marriage.

Dewani stared impassively ahead while Van Zyl pleaded not guilty on five counts relating to murder and kidnapping on his behalf.

Inside courtroom two, Anni’s family, including her parents Vinod and Nilam, lined the left wall; the Dewani family, including his parents Prakash and Shila, sat against the right. Between them in the dock sat Shrien in a dark suit.

After a short tea break, video footage of the murder scene in Gugulethu showed Anni’s dead body sprawled over the taxi’s back seat.

Her tight black minidress is hiked up to expose her thighs next to a flowered, lace shawl. Her scarlet painted toenails protrude from diamante-embellished silver sandals.

Anni’s brother Anish cried bitterly as footage of her body was shown. Her parents had probably been warned and were not in court at the time.

The state’s first witness, pathologist Janette Verster, read from a postmortem report.

She said it was likely that the three sets of gunshot wounds sustained by Anni – to her left hand, neck and spine – had in fact been caused by a single bullet.

She said the gunshot wounds show that Anni had cowered behind her lifted left arm when she died.

Today, Van Zyl’s revelation about Shrien’s sexual orientation corroborates revelations by a 40-year-old British rent boy who claimed Shrien paid him R6 500 for “humiliating” fetish sex sessions of up to three hours long.

In a leaked police statement, the male prostitute called Leopold Leisser said Shrien told him about his fiancée – and that he didn’t want to marry her.

It is believed that Leisser will be called to testify in the murder trial.
