Silent Muslims must speak up

2015-04-12 15:00

I start by stating that South Africa and Africa belong to all those who live in it, irrespective of race, gender, religion, colour or social background.

However, I want to focus on religion.

The brutal killing of 147 Kenyan students at Garissa University College makes me conclude that it is safer to be a Muslim than a Christian nowadays. My statement is supported by the fact that we are told that these Islamic groups have a tendency to distinguish Muslims from non-Muslims.

I want to state categorically that I’m not painting Muslims as bad people. But let true Muslims stand up, distance themselves from these killings and assist authorities in bringing perpetrators to book. My close friends have affirmed more than once that Muslims are not cruel and barbaric in nature.

However, the fact remains that African citizens who are not Muslim are killed in the name of Islam.
