Simon Magakwe finished last in his first appearance in the ongoing Diamond League series.

Magakwe came eighth in 10.13 in a 100m race won by American Justin Gatlin in 9.76 tonight.

Gatlin, who is last year’s IAAF World Championships silver medallist, remains undefeated this year.

Despite the setback at tonight’s Prefontaine Classic track and field meeting, Magakwe’s mark remains one of the fastest times on the local front so far this year.

He holds the SA 100m record with a personal best of 9.98 and his time from the US event is only beaten by Akani Simbine’s 10.02 and 10.11, which the Athletics Gauteng North sprinter attained during the national championships in April.

Magakwe’s next Diamond race will be in Rome, Italy, on June 5.

In his final competitive race abroad, the lad from Itsoseng township near Mahikeng, North West, is set to face world record holder Usain Bolt of Jamaica at the IAAF World Challenge in Ostrava, Czech Republic, on June 17.
