A two-year-old girl whose seven-month-old brother was found dead in Diepsloot has been placed under the care of social workers. Police handed the toddler over to the social workers yesterday because her grandmother is being investigated, said the police’s Captain Tsekiso Mofokeng. “There is a possibility of the grandmother being charged with child negligence, but we are still investigating.” Mofokeng said the toddlers were initially under her care and she was not supposed to give them to their mother who often neglected them. The baby was found dead and mutilated in their mother’s shack in Diepsloot on Sunday morning, a day after she took them from the grandmother. Mofokeng said on Monday they suspected rats bit off the baby’s foot while he was left alone in a shack. Their mother and her boyfriend appeared briefly in the Pretoria Magistrates’ Court yesterday on charges of murder and negligence. The case against Nokuthula Gumede (23) and her boyfriend Fernando Sidanvo (35) was postponed to November 20. They remained in custody, said Mofokeng.
