Six changes for Lions ahead of Bulls clash

2012-04-11 16:02

The Lions made six changes to the side that lost 26-5 to the Cheetahs while the Bulls made only two changes to the side that pipped the Crusaders 32-30, ahead of their clash this Saturday.

The Lions and the Bulls are set to meet in a Super Rugby match at Coca Cola Park in Johannesburg. Kickoff is at 19:10pm on Saturday.

Lions coach John Mitchell was wary of the physical threat the Bulls posed and said the changes were made specifically to counter them but emphasised that they were not only focusing on the opposition.

“They present us with opportunities and we have focused on that. They have strengths too and they have a particular way in which they play, which we are aware of, but we have focused on ourselves,” he said.

Andries Coetzee moved from wing to fullback while regular fullback Jaco Taute moved to outside centre, replacing Alwyn Hollenbach, who moves to number 12. James Kamana earns a start on the wing, with Butch
James dropping to the bench.

Stephan Greef takes the place of the injured Paul Willemse at lock while Callie Visagie rotates with Martin Bezuidenhout at hooker. Ruan Dreyer, Ettienne Oosthuizen and Michael Bondesio drop out of the match 22 completely.

While citing the inexperience of his team, Mitchell said they are suffering because they have yet to apply the lessons they should have learnt in the past four weeks.

“We haven’t learnt our lessons very well ... and life always sends you lessons so it is about how quickly you learn. We are learning to work together and learning to grab patience. Those are two things we have struggled with over the last four weeks and a lot of it has come through change as a result of what we have experienced, but over time we will grab that and get a result when we grab those two things,” Mitchell added.
The Bulls have the wood over their Jukskei rivals, with the team in blue beating the Lions 30-23 in Pretoria and 24-20 in Johannesburg last year.

Former Western Province winger JJ Engelbrecht earns his first start in an unaccustomed position of centre, while Johann Sadie drops to the bench. Wilhelm Steenkamp replaces Flip van der Merwe, who has been given a rest. Flank Dewald Potgieter returns to the bench.
