Six killed in KZN massacre

2010-10-26 13:28

Six people, including two children, were gunned down in two Shongweni Dam homes near Durban, KwaZulu-Natal police said today.

Among the dead were two boys, Talente and Nthobisi Zulu, aged two and eight, said Brigadier Phindile Radebe.

The other victims were named as Thabani Zulu (18), Nokhuthula Zulu (22), Sthembiso Nxusa (29) and Ngenseni Hlongwane (40).

Radebe said a 13-year-old girl was allegedly raped and a 32-year-old woman was among those shot, but she survived.

She was being treated in hospital.

Initial investigations revealed that a gang of about four entered the two homes, located about 500m apart in Bosha Road, and opened fire at 11pm yesterday.

The motive for the killings was unknown. Detectives from the Hawks and Organised Crime Unit had been on the scene from early today.

Spent 9mm cartridges were found on the scene.

“Members of the forensic science laboratory are combing the area for clues,” said Radebe.

“The case has been handed to organised crime to investigate, and they are busy taking statements from witnesses right now.”

Hawks spokesperson Musa Zondi was unable to comment.

Cases of murder, attempted murder and rape were opened.

Provincial community safety MEC Willies Mchunu condemned the massacre and said the perpetrators would face the full might of the law.

A task team was deployed to the area to help find the killers.

“This kind of ruthless killing can only be executed by thugs. Law enforcement agencies will work around the clock investigating this crime,” said Mchunu.

Mchunu would be visiting the affected families today.
