Six trapped in Polish coal mine after blaze

2011-05-06 08:55

Warsaw – Six people (four miners and two rescuers), were trapped today in the Krupinski coal mine in Poland’s southern Silesian coal basin after an underground blaze, officials said.

“The rescue action is still under way and we are trying to access all the people who are trapped underground,” Agnieszka Barzycka, spokesperson for the JSW company that owns the mine, told AFP.

Rescuers on the surface know where the four trapped miners are located, but have lost contact with their two colleagues underground, she added.

Underground temperatures reaching 45°C (113° Fahrenheit) and thick smoke were hampering the rescue effort, Barzycka said.

A blaze broke out yesterday evening nearly 1km underground, close to where a total of 32 miners were working.

Fourteen were injured, including eight hospitalised with burns, but their lives were not in danger, JSW said.
