Skateboarder critical after competition

2011-06-18 13:38

A sixteen-year-old skateboarder was in a critical condition after falling during a competition in Pretoria today, paramedics said.

Netcare 911 spokesman Jeff Wicks said the teenager had been participating in a skateboarding competition at the Voortrekker Monument.

He was moving down a slope when he lost balance and fell backwards, striking his head on the ground.

Medical staff at the scene attended to him before Netcare 911 paramedics arrived and transported him to the Netcare Unitas Hospital.

Wicks said the boy sustained significant head trauma and was fighting for his life.
