Slam dunking with Sthembiso ‘SK’ Khoza

2012-11-15 10:28

Sthembiso ‘SK’ Khoza grew up in Ntuzuma township in Durban, where he got his first taste of basketball.

‘I love the technique of shooting and dribbling using your hands – it’s not as easy as it looks,’ says the hot new face of Channel O’s Goal Diggerz 2, which he presents with fellow soccer fan Lungile Radu.

‘Shooting a three-point shot during a game is the best feeling. It’s fast – and you need to think quickly. But the ultimate is the rush of landing an awesome slam dunk.’

On screen, SK and Lungile get up close and personal with African and international soccer players, giving viewers a glimpse into the off-pitch lives of the elite few who make it as professional footballers.

‘Getting to see their pimped homes, their amazing cars and expensive clothes was cool and inspiring at the same time,’ SK says about the 18-episode TV series.

Despite his serious soccer fanaticism, SK lists American basketball star Michael Jordan as one of his favourite sportsmen.

‘He put the sport – and the National Basketball Assocation – on the world map in the 80s and made the slam dunk his signature move. But he’s also an astute businessman. He’s totally inspiring.’

The upbeat presenter adds that he’s learnt some valuable lessons from the soccer stars he interviewed.
‘Doing Goal Diggerz 2 has taught me that humility goes a long way. As much as these guys are professional footballers who make a lot of money, they are still humble, real and down-to-earth. That’s a lesson that everyone should take to heart,’ he says.

What SK says:

‘Working with Lungile was a dream come true.’

If you weren’t on TV, what would you be doing?
I’d be in Singapore acting in the American musical The Buddy Holly Story. Because I’d just gotten my break at Channel O, I had to let that opportunity go.

If you could have a super power, what would it be?
I would love to have the power to fly, just so I can go wherever I wanted in the world whenever I felt like it. And I would miss traffic!

» Catch Goal Diggerz 2 every Tuesday at 6.30pm on Channel O (DStv channel 320) until 20 November.
