Slight improvement for Bafana in latest Fifa rankings

2014-09-18 11:51

Bafana Bafana moved up two spots to 67th in the latest world rankings released by Fifa today.

The South Africans remain 14th in the African standings, unchanged since the last rounds of rankings were released on August 14.

Bafana thrashed Sudan 3-0 in their opening 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Khartoum on September 5, before holding defending Afcon champions, Nigeria, to a goalless draw on September 10.

Next month, Bafana face Congo-Brazzaville twice in five days, home and away, as the Afcon qualifiers enter their third and fourth rounds.

Meanwhile, World Cup winners Germany are still first in the rankings despite losing to second-place Argentina in a friendly rematch of their final this month.

Colombia climbs one place to third, even though it lost to Brazil in a friendly, and trades places with the Netherlands which lost both its matches this month.

Belgium stays fifth and Brazil climbs one spot to sixth; Uruguay is number seven, followed by Spain.

France and Switzerland, which lost to England in a European Championship qualifier, trade places to complete the top 10.

Algeria leads African nations at number 20, up four.
