Small athletics team to represent SA at World Indoors

South Africa will send “a small” track and field team to the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Turkey next month.

Athletics South Africa (ASA) chief executive Frik Vermaak told City Press that the team will be formally named on Monday.

“It’s going to be a relatively small team,” said Vermaak of the group that will compete at the March 9 to 11 competition in Instanbul.

Vermaak could not immediately say if they would send the 4x400m relay team as there is no standard entry set in this category.

Those who have qualified so far are long jumper Khotso Mokoena, sprint hurdler Lehann Fourie and long distance runner Elroy Gelant.

Mokoena won gold at the Spain edition in 2008 in the same event where Mbulaeni Mulaudzi won silver in 800m.

However, Mulaudzi said he won’t compete in Turkey despite being invited by the IAAF.
