Sparkling bright lights and glamour overload are what the organisers of the first Royalty Soapie Awards promise come November 2.

At a media briefing held over breakfast at the posh Munro Boutique Hotel in Houghton yesterday, the date for the awards was announced and Durban’s International Convention Centre confirmed as the venue for the next three years.

Entries are open from today whereby production companies can enter their shows until July 10. Each entry costs R350. The field has been thrown wide open to include traditional soapies such as Generations, Isidingo, Scandal! and Rhythm City as well as the popular Mzansi Magic telenovelas like Isibaya.

Once the judging and vetting processes have been completed, the nominees will be announced in September. The tickets, starting at R150 per person will also go on sale at this time. There are VIP and corporate packages that go for R1 000 and R10 000 respectively.

The statuettes to be handed out on the night were also unveiled. They are shaped like a traditional mask with ethnic textures. It will be made out of bronze and glass and will be in part a tribute to the masks actors put on when they act out their characters.

Some of the categories are Outstanding Lead Actor/Actress and Outstanding Male/Female Villian. Gongs will be handed out in the creative and technical fields as well.

Boasting about the event, Lebo Mbethe of the awards enthused: “Imagine the Emmys, just better.”

While there is no monetary value attached to the awards at this stage, Sindile Xulu, a director of the awards, said they would wait and see what they have in the kitty closer to the time.

The awards are the brainchild of Generations star Winnie Modise who plays Khethiwe Ngcobo. She arrived in a roaring fiery red Ferrari, stylishly clad in a demure brown pants suit, yellow heels and matching bag.

She said she had just snuck out of the Generations set to make an appearance, then rushed back to finish her scenes for the day.

The organisers stressed Modise recused herself from being nominated and taking part in the judging process, which will be audited by an independent firm.
