Isibaya, Scandal! and 7de Laan will duke it out at the 2015 Royalty Soapie Awards after each scoring 16, 16 and 14 nominations, respectively.

Generations only picked up one nomination, in the important Most Popular Soapie category – which is among those decided on viewer votes.

The awards were founded by former Generations actress and businesswoman Winnie Modise and launched last year. The 2015 nominees were announced at a cocktail event at Melrose Arch’s popular The Venue.

The dress code for the evening was elegant. After canapés and some quality time at the open bar, the event kicked off at 7.30pm and was led by MCs Goliath and Goliath. It was staged as a talk show.

The duo managed to make the obligatory sponsor speech with a representative of the KwaZulu-Natal arts and culture department.

The awards are sponsored by the department, DStv’s Mzansi Magic, Ukhozi FM and BMW.

Generations was the biggest loser – last year it got 13 nominations, but it won no awards. Still, from 13 to one is quite a dive.

Isibaya and Scandal! led the pack with 16 nominations each, while 7de Laan scored 14 nominations. kykNET’s Villa Rosa was nominated in three categories and SABC2’s Muvhango in two.

Guests included Slindile Nodangala (who played Ruby on Generations), Sophie Ndaba, DJ Tira (who also provided the music) David Kau, Penny Lebyane, Vusi Kunene, designer Gert-Johan Coetzee, Jessica Nkosi, Somizi Mhlongo, Isidingo’s Kgomotso Christopher and a large contingent of the Scandal! cast.

Categories to be decided by viewer votes are:

»Outstanding lead actor – nominees include Isibaya’s Siyabonga Thwala and Isidingo’s Kunene;

»Outstanding lead actress – Christopher as Katlego in Isidingo, Marjorie Langa (Gloria in Scandal!) and Thembi Nyandeni (Mkabayi in Isibaya);

»Outstanding male villain;

»Outstanding female villain;

»Outstanding supporting actor;

»Outstanding supporting actress; and

»Outstanding newcomer.

Voting lines for the viewers’ choice categories close on March 20. The awards will be held at the Durban International Convention Centre on March 28.
