A night of catfights and excess as Kuli upstages Savita. Siyabonga Sithole covers the high jinks

It was the battle of revealing and daring outfits as the gay community, celebs and socialites descended on the pink carpet of the Feather Awards held at the Kyalami Theatre on Thursday night.

Zone 14 actress Khanya Mkangisa, The Link presenter Lerato Kganyago and Isibaya actor Nomzamo Mbatha left photographers gasping for air with their see-through outfits.

The femme fatales were determined to rattle the feathers, quite literally, and boy did they succeed.

The absence of some of the winners was conspicuous and that led to opportunistic self-appointed representatives.

Drama prevailed when Kaya FM breakfast show co-host Kuli Roberts hijacked the Drama Queen award won by the controversial Savita Mbuli, widow of Vuyo Mbuli. Roberts practically declared a catfight sequel when she said: “You know where to get the award Savita.”

This was followed by murmurs and claps from the audience. Their ongoing spat is the stuff of legends after Savita accused Roberts of having been one of Vuyo’s girlfriends. Miaaaow!

Others who were missing in action were Lucas Sithole, Azania Mosaka, Tall As Mo and his wife, Mome, and actor Pallance Dladla.

Earlier in the evening the premier of Gauteng, Nomvula Mokonyane, who is a bona fide Fomo sufferer waltzed on to the pink carpet to spin us about how far back she has been with the gay community.

We expected her to spit out some catty remark like she did in Bekkersdal about “dirty votes”.

Kelly “Shisampama” Khumalo also rocked up and showed off her bulging tummy to the photographers, but when asked how far the pregnancy was, she barked: “It’s none of your business.”

Role Model nominee Zoleka Mandela sauntered in with her hunky man, Thierry Bashala, looking all happy and radiant. Bashala was not shy to tell City Press that if Zoleka did not win the award he was going to go mad.

Well, Zoleka did not win, so Sterkfontein (mental hospital) is on standby for his admission. – Additional reporting by Jeanette Chabalala publishes all comments posted on articles provided that they adhere to our Comments Policy.
