Siyabonga Sithole finds out that Sowetans have become discerning wine enthusiasts and that perceptions are changing

Music and wine maketh an enjoyable atmosphere and the TOPS at Spar Soweto Wine Festival was no different.

More than a thousand people descended on the University of Johannesburg’s Soweto campus on Thursday evening for yet another session of sniff, swirl and spit.

The three-day lifestyle festival, which ended yesterday, attracted both connoisseurs and novices.

So what makes a good wine?

According to one connoisseur, it is “a blend of maturity and good taste that lingers long after you have swallowed it”.

Mnikelo Mangciphu, the festival’s co-founder and owner of Morara Wine and Spirit Emporium in Soweto, said the great attendance proves that the people of Soweto have become discerning wine enthusiasts and that perceptions are changing.

Emerging and famous wine brands were on full display at their respective stalls manned by personnel eager to impress with their wine speak.

Metro FM DJ Unathi Msengana, along with former Isidingo actress Hlubi Mboya, were the hostesses. Their duties ended when the festival got under way just before 7.30pm.

One connoisseur, Doleza Thothela, complained that the festival still failed to attract flagship brands such as the Ernie Els range of wines. But the many people who attended didn’t seem to mind who the maker was, as long as it went down well.

The likes of Nederburg, Remogo, Robertson, Lindhorst, JC Le Roux, Seven Sisters, KWV, Quay 5 and Simonsig all competed for the available space.

There were so many exhibitors you could get drunk just trying to count them all.
