Energy reigned supreme – we could fly – at Shine Studios in Braamfontein when Cell C and Red Bull launched Red Bull Mobile starter pack on Wednesday night.

The venue was filled to capacity and revellers mingled as drinks kept coming the whole night.

Top Billing presenter and ladies man Simba Mhere arrived earlier than most people.

Roaring revved-up engines and tyre screeches by some bikers did little to inject life in the guests, mostly middle-aged men in coats.

Real celebrities started filtering in just before DJ Black Coffee got to the booth at 8.30pm. How’s that for impeccable timing?

The event got into fourth gear thanks to Black Coffee, who got the crowd eating out of his hand. His set got even the stiffest of rhythmically challenged white males dancing – or was it shuffling?

Flamboyant choreographer Somizi Mhlongo dressed in black pants, black jacket and black iron-spiked boots, and was accompanied by a female friend.

He was shortly followed by David Tlale also in all black, his latest obsession, paired with maroon-pointed shoes. They could have been twins with their all-black dress code and hair styles – Somizi had a ’fro and Tlale teased his hair into a coif – sunglasses and gold snake chain necklace.

Azania Mosaka was powered by her vintage red dress with shoulder horns. Being on Power FM suits her. She exudes happiness.

Kaizer Chiefs star and face of Red Bull Siphiwe Tshabalala came in last in a Red Bull cap, a baseball jacket, jeans and sneakers. All the attention of groupies belonged to him at the entrance while he stood erect for the cameras and was heard saying “ngiyaspana” (I am working).

Johnny Clegg of Juluka fame seemed to have a busy week out. He was seen at the Bastille Day celebrations and made an appearance at this gig.

Always eager for a laugh, Clegg did a isicathamiya pose with Dr Malinga, he of the famous high kicks. This got me thinking of a collaboration between the two. It will be a competition of kicks – ballet meets Zulu traditional.

I had a good giggle spying on actor, presenter and model Pearl Thusi eating like a possessed fiend when platters of finger snacks circulated throughout the night. Clearly she doesn’t believe in the rabbit diet for models.

A fun night out with the oldies.
