A shopkeeper was killed and another injured in a botched robbery at their shop in Delft, on the outskirts of Cape Town, Western Cape police said today.

“Last night at approximately 9.40pm two Somalian shopkeepers came under fire while trading at Milano spaza shop,” spokesperson Captain Joe Wilson said.

“It is alleged that two unknown males approached the shopkeepers. The one suspect fired two shots at the shopkeeper, 30-year-old Idiris Haji.”

The robbers failed to enter the shop and before fleeing the scene allegedly threw a petrol bomb into it.

Local residents helped the second man, aged 40, escape with minor burns to his arm.

Nothing was stolen, but the shop was extensively damaged by the fire.

A case of murder, attempted murder and arson was opened.

Anyone with information about the attack could call Constable Pieter Bonthuys on 021 954 9000.
