Some more, please: A place where someone else watches your child

2010-11-10 13:20

Catching up with other mothers is a much more successful affair if Thulani’s on hand. Possibly one of Johannesburg’s most sought after young men – he is a sight for sore eyes.

If you are a regular at Serendipity in Rosebank you know just who I am on about – if not, read on.

Serendipity is an old house that has been converted into a children’s castle of fun – there’s an art room, a dress-up room, a couple of princess tents, a trampoline, jungle gyms, tunnels to wriggle through and, most important, a big garden to play in – that has a big wall around it.

If you’ve a toddler you will know that a place without fences is not child-friendly in the mother’s interpretation of the word – that is, I have to be able to sit down for longer than five minutes together and sip a coffee. If I can’t, your establishment allows children, but doesn’t really cater for them.

So, back to Thulani – he’s one of the child-minders at Serendipity and the one who fills my toddler with delight. As we sign in, her eyes start scanning for him and when she alights upon his familiar frame I know I have just tumbled way down the list of desirable playmates.

But the real kicker is that Serendipity serves good food too. The cake is baked fresh daily and varies (important, as once you find this place you’ll keep coming back), the breakfasts are well done and the lunches are scrumptious – especially the homemade burgers and the salads.

If you have got to the awkward age where you can’t get the toddler to sit still – ever – and spend every meal out scoffing your food at high speed or in a speed-eating relay with your partner, give Serendipity a try.

The number is 011 447 7386 and booking is often a good idea.
