Some more, please: Break free of breakfast

2010-10-27 08:06

Breakfast food is boring. If I think so, how on earth am I supposed to fill the toddler’s heart with greedy glee at the thought of oats, muesli or, ugh, wobbly eggs?

Simple, I don’t bother pimping that stuff any more.

After months of combining good-for-you-but-oh-so-bland oats with coconut milk, cinnamon and almonds – sugar, of course, is out of the question for a food Nazi like me – I had a eureka moment. I’d give up and give the toddler a little food choice.

The result of this revolutionary, if frowned upon by experts, experiment has yielded pretty good if somewhat mixed results.

I open the fridge and she gestures at what she fancies – and, yes, I can hear my child-rearing guru groaning at the very idea.

This morning, for example, she munched her way through two chicken wings (the wonderful ones in Annabel Karmel’s Top 100 Finger Foods that I made for mid-morning snacks, but who cares? Protein is protein whether it’s 7am or 10am).

She interspersed the ginger, soy sauce and lemon juice coated wings with handfuls of fresh blueberries, not a combination that springs to mind, but hey, taste is personal isn’t it?

So, having liberated myself from culturally engrained breakfast foods, or perhaps from the tyranny of big corporates who flog breakfast cereals – the gastronomic world is the toddler’s oyster – why can’t she have her beloved pesto pasta in the morning? Or tuck into last night’s leftover cottage pie?

Hell, I think chicken casserole is an inspired breakfast choice?– all that garlic’s bound to keep unwanted playmates at bay.
