Some more, please: Down time, family time, socialising time

There’s a very good reason for Christmas, even if you’ve never sung Hark the Herald Angels Sing in your life.

Down time. Family time. Socialising time.

I don’t know about you, but sometimes I don’t see friends I love dearly for months at a time, not because I have gone off them, but because I am always too busy doing other stuff.

Christmas is a time to reflect on what is really important (before forgetting again for 11 months of craziness) – my first thought is always eating, as expected, but it’s who you eat with that matters.

Though December is the busiest time of the year at work, I still try to make time to have lunch with a few of the folk I find scintillating.

I try to couple that with a visit to somewhere that I want to eat.

On Saturday night I managed to go somewhere fabulous with someone fabulous – my husband.

We dined at Hyde Park’s chi-chi Bice Ristorante and had flashbacks to our Italian holiday a few years back. The chef is fabulously Italian, as is the owner, the manager and the sommelier – whose choice of wines was sublime.

The food was, well, fabulous. The gnocchi, the best I have ever had. The secret? 95% potato, 5% flour.

None of that tackiness of the store-bought stuff, just melt in the mouth heaven.

The fillet was equally delicious and the scallop with the fish course more-ish.

Needless to say, this evening was an all-adult affair – a chance to chat with the handsomest man I know in a quiet, elegant setting instead of over the fishcakes or while we watch Ceebeebies and hope the toddler eats her broccoli.

The lesson, which I first read in the alarmingly titled How to Baby Proof Your Marriage, is to take time out, to talk of esoteric things, to make time to smile without a list of chores running through your mind.

All year long it’s easier said than done, but at Christmas something miraculous happens – moods lift though we are all tired and we all make time to spend time nurturing our relationships.

As always my New Year’s resolution is to continue to do so – what is the chance of success? Let’s reconvene in January to find out.

Happy holidays, remember to make a human connection – over food, of course.
