Some more, please: In search of Sid...

2010-09-28 14:13

Last weekend, toddler in tow, we trekked off to the Coca-Cola Dome to the Good Food and Wine Show to see Sid.

Sid Sloane – for those who have been living under a rock or don’t have children – is the Cbeebies continuity presenter.

In our house his smiling mug marks the final hour before bedtime – if Sid’s introducing In the Night Garden (PVR’d, of course, the real time’s far too late) it’s the final countdown to wine time.

As luck would have it, though, there were just too many children ahead of us in the queue – the jostle and bustle was too much (and many of the mothers were just more committed than me).

Also, I had begun to realise that it wasn’t the toddler who was excited to see Sid – it was me.

It is he who saves me from insanity during what is known as suicide hour among parents of tired toddlers.

He also reinforces my food ethic – making faces out of salad ingredients on screen and his show this year was entitled Good Sandwich, Bad Sandwich.

All designed to make chip-guzzling children eat more greens.

His partner in food education was Katy Ashworth, who presents the kids’ cooking show I Can Cook, also on the sanity saving Cbeebies.

An actress by trade, she’s young and energetic and gets the children excited about making their own food, which makes them more likely to eat it.

While we might have missed Sid, we did take the toddler to sign up for the Little Cooks Club, a local concern that teaches children about food – planting it, growing it, preparing it and then eating it.

We’ll let you know how it goes…
