Some more, please: The art of cheating in the kitchen

Alas, often to win the race it’s necessary to cheat. Hell, sometimes it’s necessary to cheat just to keep up with the demand.

The demand for three meals a day, the demand for healthy snacks to break up those meals – whew, it’s a full-time job to cook everything myself and I already have one of those.

So, here’s the confession, I buy in ready-made lunches to supplement my supply of toddler food.

While I am perfectly capable of making big batches of macaroni cheese, chicken a la king and cottage pie?– I also have to find time to watch Horatio Caine make increasingly arch comments about crime in Miami.

Also, I have to keep up with my own obsession with variety – this in a desperate (probably futile) effort to not end up with a three-year-old who only eats cheesy pasta or cherry tomatoes – yes, I have friends who have exactly these two children.

Of course, one of them is a trained chef – proving that you get the child most likely to test you.

When it comes to the art of Zen, mothers have to get it right – or go cracker crazy.

So, in the futile pursuit of variety – every week I log on to and I order a pile of lunches from chicken in creamy thyme and mushroom sauce, to coq au vin and lasagna as well as fettucine alfredo and, the toddler’s favourite, puttanesca pasta. Also, the company does whole spatchcock chickens in yummy marinades, which the toddler also loves and the pesto is heavenly as is the hummus.

So, while the day of the mono-meal might still come, I can’t be blamed, which is fabulous because you can be sure I will be at fault for just about everything else. That is a mother’s lot too.
