Some more, please: What snack and other mind-altering questions

2011-01-20 07:30

It’s official. I’m a Twit. I finally joined the Twitter universe – but I have nothing to say. The pressure of trying to say something that someone, anyone, else might find either interesting or useful is overwhelming. And that chirpy “What’s happening?” daring me to be profound is most unhelpful.

But I am bound to find my rhythm any tweet now, after all I am that most adaptable of creatures – a mother.

Speaking of adapting, another milestone on the parental highway came and went this week. That’s right we survived the first day of playschool. And by we, I mean me?– the toddler toddled off towards the unknown without a backward glance at her poor obsessing mother.

Shortly after processing the realisation that there will be bountiful life beyond our home for the toddler I started to feel the familiar pressure of motherhood return. What, oh what, can I put in her snack box twice a week?

Goodness only knows how mothers with multiple children who go to school every day cope with the enormous responsibility of nutrition out of the home. For me it’s become yet another mini-obsession.

If I gave her grapes, cheese cubes and water biscuits on Friday, I can’t do the same on Wednesday, can I? Is she going to eat the blueberries today, or is today a strawberry day? A banana?– she never eats a whole one but can I send half of one?

Chicken or beef sausage? Does a mini-quiche look a little poncey? At home she’d eat dolmades as a snack, but are they too messy for a snack box? Chicken wings, but what about the bones?

Of course what I am really obsessing about is if little Johnny is eating the nutritionally-balanced snacks I am painstakingly packing and the toddler’s eating his sugary, E-number-laden biscuits.

Sooner or later I will adapt to the change and allow it to control a little less of my life.

Perhaps if I figure out how to tweet without looking like a complete twit, I will tell you all about my next obsession in 140 characters. Let’s hope it’s not Twitter.
