Songs about me are not campaigning – Zuma

2012-06-26 15:41

President Jacob Zuma has defended those who have sung songs supporting him at the opening of the ANC’s policy conference.

“I joined the ANC when Luthuli was president. We sang about him when he was there,” he said.

“When Tambo became president, we sang about Tambo. We sang many songs about the president.”

Zuma said the ANC also sang songs about former presidents Nelson Mandela and Thabo Mbeki.

“When you sing about leaders, you are not campaigning.”

Zuma addressed the first press conference of the policy conference this afternoon on conference credentials and on his opening speech earlier in the day.

It was a somewhat surprising move and journalists were only told an hour beforehand that it was Zuma himself who would address them.

This came after Human Settlements Minister Tokyo Sexwale somewhat upstaged Zuma by questioning whether conference rules allowed for songs to be sung in anybody’s favour.

Sexwale’s complaint was dismissed by the conference.

Earlier delegates were singing songs saying “we go with Zuma, we go with our president ... We are not ashamed” and “if you burn a T-shirt of Zuma you will get a bullet”.

ANC members are barred from discussing names in the leadership debate until October.
