South Africa is ready, says German soccer legend

Franz Beckenbauer, the president of Germany 2006’s World Cup

organising committee, gave his stamp of approval for the preparations for this

year’s competition.

“South Africa is ready,” the German legend said in Johannesburg,

just three days before the kickoff of the 2010 Fifa World Cup.

Looking forward to the opening match between hosts South Africa and

Mexico on Friday in Johannesburg, Beckenbauer said: “Everything is extremely

well organised. It is a fantastic country.”

Beckenbauer added that expectations are “very, very high” for the

first World Cup on African soil.

“If the weather stays like it is, we will experience four wonderful

weeks,” said Beckenbauer, who won the World Cup as a player in 1974 and coach in
