South Africans get extra public holiday

2011-12-14 15:07

Tuesday, December 27, has been declared a public holiday.

According to a statement issued by the Presidency this afternoon, Acting President Kgalema Motlanthe declared the day a public holiday in terms of the Public Holidays Act.

Earlier this week, the Federation of Unions of SA (Fedusa) said it had approached the president to grant South Africans an extra public holiday.

General secretary Dennis George said according to the Public Holidays Act, with Christmas being on a Sunday this year, it would mean Monday would have to be a public holiday.

“However, Monday, December 26 2011, is the Day of Goodwill, meaning that it falls outside the ambit of the Public Holidays Act.”

Fedusa therefore asked that December 27 be declared a public holiday.
