Soweto Derby draw setback for Pirates

2012-12-08 18:08

Orlando Pirates’ hopes of catching up with their rivals, Kaizer Chiefs, at the summit of the Absa Premiership fell short during a sold-out Soweto Derby at the FNB Stadium today.

The gap between the two Soweto giants remains three points with a game to spare before the conclusion of the second quarter of the Q-Innovation of which Pirates are unbeaten in six matches.

Lehlohonolo Majoro finished off a quick build-up near the hour mark to cancel out a first-half goal by Collins Mbesuma that put Bucs ahead just 21 minutes into the Absa Premiership encounter.

While Pirates created the most of their chances in the opening stanza, the defending champions had to fend off a late game onslaught from Chiefs who almost clinched the tie on stoppage time had Kingston Nkhatha buried Siphiwe Tshabalala’s appetising cross.

Earlier, Pirates second half substitute Benni McCarthy had fashioned out a spectacular overhead volley that missed Itumeleng Khune’s crossbar by a few centimetres.

Pirates need to win their game against Maritzburg United on Friday if they harbour any hopes of emulating Chiefs by claiming the R1.5 million quarterly prize that comes with the Q-Innovation mini leagues.
