Soweto Open back in 2013

2012-10-26 13:33

The Soweto Open is back.

This was announced by Minister of Sports and Recreation Fikile Mbalula and the South African Tennis Association (Sata) in Johannesburg today.

The annual event was called off when the Johannesburg City Council, which had sponsored the Soweto Open since its inception in 2009, did not renew the sponsorship because of financial constraints.

The Soweto Open will be staged at the Arthur Ashe Tennis Centre in Soweto early next year.

Mbalula said his department had set aside R5 million for the event.

“It is our belief that Soweto Open in 2013 will attract more spectators than ever before and will continue to expose many young South Africans, developing players and emerging professionals from disadvantaged and neglected communities while at the same time uplifting the standard of living and tennis in these areas,” said Mbalula.

The news comes shortly before the South African visit of international tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams.

The American siblings will hold tennis clinics in Soweto on November 3 and play an exhibition tennis match at Johannesburg’s Ellis Park arena the following day.

Tickets for the exhibition match have been sold out.
