Soweto riots: ‘Let’s not disappoint Mandela’

2015-01-24 09:21

Religious leaders have appealed for peace in Soweto.

“It is just one year after the death of Tata Nelson Mandela. Let us not disappoint his spirit,” Gift Moerane, on behalf of the religious leaders, told a residents’ meeting yesterday.

Religious and African National Congress leaders were in Doornkop to appeal for peace.

Moerane thanked Doornkop residents for remaining calm after a teenager was shot dead on Monday.

“We are grateful that you listen and restore calm,” he said.

At least three people have been killed since looting and unrest began in Soweto on Monday. Siphiwe Mahori (14) was shot dead when he and others allegedly tried to rob a Somali-owned store in Snake Park. The shop owner, Senosi Yusuf, is expected to appear in the Protea Magistrates’ Court on a charge of murder on Monday.

The looting spilled over to Kagiso in the West Rand and Sebokeng in the Vaal.

Joburg mayor Parks Tau appealed to residents to restore law and order.
