Speculation to say man was murdered over firewood – police

A 73-year-old man was stabbed to death, allegedly by a man who

wanted to chop firewood on his plot in Dennilton village, Limpopo.

According to Constable Mmapitso Aphane, a passer-by discovered the

body lying on the grass on his plot in Section 5, Morgan Street, around noon

yesterday and called the police.

Aphane said: “The body was lying next to an old house with one open

wound at the back of the head.

The old man was apparently stabbed to death with

a sharp object.

Residents caught a 27-year-old man three hours after the body was

found and accused him of the killing.

“The mob linked the man to the murder because they said he always

went to the plot to forcefully chop firewood.

He was detained at our station for

questioning. This was after the police saved him from an angry crowd, who wanted

to beat him up to death,” Aphane said.

A case of murder has been opened for investigation. No arrests had

been made.
