Sporting giants who forgot that it’s really only a game

Ricky Ponting, captain of World Cup-holders Australia, will be charged after allegedly damaging a television set in the dressing room following his dismissal during his side’s victory over Zimbabwe.

Here are a few other examples of temper tantrums among the sporting elite:

» Goran Ivanisevic
During an ATP tournament in Brighton, England, Goran Ivanisevic smashed one racket after another and then had none left to play with.

After running out of the three rackets he started with, he had to default during the final set of his match.

The umpire announced a default because of a “lack of appropriate equipment”.

He was fined $1 000 for code violations.

» Ben Crenshaw:

Golfer Ben Crenshaw broke his putter in anger in a singles match at the 1987 Ryder Cup and putted the rest of the match with his 1-iron and sand wedge. Crenshaw lost the match to Eamonn Darcy.

» Chris Broad:
Chris Broad smashed the middle stump out of the ground after being dismissed in the Bicentennial Test in Sydney in 1988.

The England opener, who had been warned along with every other player about the importance of good conduct on this tour, was instantly fined £500 for an act which took the shine off a marathon century.

Broad had been at the crease for seven-and-a-quarter hours when a rising ball from Steve Waugh caught his elbow and dropped on to his stumps.

» Sir Alex Ferguson:
In 2003, David Beckham’s exit from Manchester United followed a deterioration in his relationship with Ferguson and came five months after the former England captain was cut on the head by a boot kicked in anger in the dressing room by Ferguson following a home defeat by Arsenal.

» Jim Playfair:
In March last year Abbotsford Heat head coach Jim Playfair disagreed with a penalty call during an ice hockey match with against the Bulldogs.

The normally composed coach smashed two of his players’ hockey sticks and ripped his suit jacket off during a profanity-laced diatribe at referee Jamie Koharski.

He was fined an unspecified amount by the league.
