Spread’s the word: Moyo, Zoo Lake

2012-01-20 12:15

The outdoor set-up at Moyo’s on a crisp Sunday morning in Joburg is one to beat. I tagged along with two friends for breakfast with their toddlers. The girls could run around and play along with the other children in a safe environment.?The atmosphere is laid-back and friendly with couples and their dogs, friends and families coming for a bite. The gravel and stones are a bit unfriendly where the metal tables and chairs are set for toddlers crawling around, but that doesn’t bother them.

Most delicious:
Sadly, the most scrumptious item on my plate were the two slices of toast, boiled eggs with sweet chili sauce. Even the strawberries were sour and the pineapple and watermelon tasteless. My bacon tasted like charcoal and the mince was inedible and it ruined my appetite for the rest of the day.

The buffet includes most items expected, but I was upset that everything was set far apart. There were fruit platters, one platter of mozzarella cheese and tomato and some muffins, yoghurt and cereals like Rice Krispies, Kellogg’s corn flakes and hot oats. Side plates had to be requested and the bowls were not close to the cereal or fruit. The charred bacon was on its own shelf while the rubbery eggs were at another station. So were the baked beans, sausages, peri-peri chicken livers and mince.

The staff is always smiling, but the service needs serious attention. Breakfast was supposed to be available from 8.30am yet we had to wait until after 9am just to get some fruit and yoghurt. Buffets are available every weekend and the fact that nothing was prepared when the doors opened is unacceptable. You have to wait forever for your drinks or for the waitering staff to check on you.

Value for money:
If you’re not fussy about food and don’t mind the puddle of oil it’s floating in, then R85 might seem worth it for the setting. Also coffee, tea and drinks are not included in the buffet price, which makes it an expensive meal. Despite the slow service and horrid food, I love the vibe and will probably visit for a drink again when I’m not in a hurry. But I won’t be going back for any buffet breakfast, ever. – Janine-Lee Gordon
