Springbok fans feel the makarapa gees

2011-09-09 06:59

Springbok fans have learnt from their soccer-fanatic co-South Africans – they are going shopping in a squatter camp for green makarapas ahead of the Rugby World Cup, which starts today.

“Twenty years ago, who would have thought that white people would be shopping for makarapas in a squatter camp?” asked Jane Simmonds, of Sandton, in northern Johannesburg, in a report in The Star.

She is now taking orders for Springbok makarapas for Uggy Khoza, an artist from Limpopo, who has decided to make the traditional hand-cut and hand-painted hard hats for rugby fans.

Khoza, who lives in a shack in Primrose, Germiston, has already sold 400 of the green hats, which feature the form of a Springbok popping out at the front.

“South Africa has changed so much and I love it!” said Simmonds.
